James Murphy / Biography

James Murphy is amongst other things, the recently retired founder & frontman of LCD Soundsystem; one of the most acclaimed and influential music combos of the last 10 years. As a DJ, he has also toured the globe headlining clubs & festivals the world over the past decade. In 2009, Murphy, together with his LCD cohort Patrick Mahoney, released their disco-fuelled Fabriclive DJ mix - touring it under the moniker ‘specialdiscoversion’. His other DJ mixes for DFA, YSL., Colette & others are renown for originality and verve.

Aside from his DJ & LCD duties, James is a co-founder of the DFA Records label in NYC, where he not only oversees the label’s output of amazing talent including the likes of The Juan Maclean, S—- Robot, Holy Ghost!, The Rapture, Planningtorock, Yacht & more, but has also produced & remixed some of the world’s finest talent from their base in Manhattan’s West Village, which houses his infamous ‘Plantain’ studio. James also contributes and performs the show music for the international fashion house Yves Saint Laurent.

LCD Soundsystem’s recent final show on April 2, 2011 at New York’s legendary Madison Square Garden, made headlines worldwide and marked a triumphant end to a band that had successfully carved their own analogue rhythmical path against the tide of the modern music industry. LCD Soundsystem released three celebrated studio albums - 2004’s LCD Soundsystem, 2006’s Sound Of Silver & 2010’s This Is Happening, along with remarkable standalone pieces like “45:33” & most recently The London Sessions. Last year he also provided the intimate score & original soundtrack recordings to Greenberg by acclaimed film director, Noah Baumbach.
